There is a newspaper article about the play written by a Jew called john Freedman and he is writing to say why he thinks the   play is Anti-Semetic or not he writes about how the play is stereotypical towards Jews saying they only care about money and they can only have one job which is money lending but they still get mocked for it and how shylock is made to look like the fool of the play.

shylock is made to fell like a monster for wanting a pound of Antonio’s flesh but the Christians are allowed to  keep slaves and treat them like donkeys, dogs and mules a quote for the play is “You have among you many a purchased slave,
Which—like your asses and your dogs and mules”

The play The Merchant Of Venice is accused of being Anti-Semetic, Anti-Semetic means to be racist towards Jews it is accused because of the stereotypes towards Jews like Jews only care about money. The play is made out to be a tragedy but it is acutually made to be a comedy the play is made to make the audience laugh at shylock

In the play The Merchant Of Venice Shylock is trying to keep his bond but everyone is being bias towards Antonio because he is Christian and Shylock is Jewish, Shylock is arguing with the Venetian Government because they are allowed to keep slaves and treat them likes asses, dogs and mules but he cant keep his bond a quote to back up this point is ” you have among you many a purchased, which like your asses, dogs and mules, you use in abject and in slavish parts”

Shylock calls the Venetian Government hypocrites because they tell Shylock he can’t take a pound of flesh because it will kill him but they are allowed slave that want to kill themselves. Jews are treated like animals because they are discriminated against. If a Christain was to kill a Jew it would be called an act of self defence but if a Jew killed a Christian he would be called a murderer 

Shylock shows the justice system is corrupt by saying ” many a purchase salve” here Shylock is saying the Venetian Government is fake and I bias. He carries on and says “these slaves are treated like asses, dogs and mules.”

Shylock says why is it ok that you have all these slaves treating them like donkeys, dogs and mules so how come I can’t stick to my bond.

Is The Merchant Of Venice Anti-Semitic?

The Merchant Of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays but Jews are discriminated against by Christians so much they have to live in a different part of Venice.

The Jews are only allowed one job which is a money lender, a Christian that goes by the name of Antonio asks for a loan of three thousand pounds to pay back in three months  but all of Antonios money are on ships all around the world, but he goes along with the deal was if Antonio didn’t pay Shylock back he could take a pound of flesh.

Venetian Hypocraisy 

I think it’s I have my bond, speak not against my bond.

I do wonder, Thou naughty jailer, that thou art are so fond. To come abroad with him at his request.

Shylock think the whole of the Venetian state are all hypocrites.

You have among you many a purchased slave, Which, like your asses and your dogs and mules.

Shylock highlights Hypocraisy in his speech by saying that the government are being hypocritical by saying that you have purchased slaves donkeys and mules but I’m not allowed to keep my private bond with Antonio.
